Favorites of Portland

If you have been to Portland or are from there, you know there's waaay more to list here.. but we only had one weekend so these are our favorites from a full day in the city & one day outside the city. Be aware that the mission of the city visit were the BREWERIES, but you might catch on to that trend.

Multnomah Falls (Beauty!)

If you're in Portland with access to a car (and hiking boots!), you've GOT to visit these famous falls! As you can see we visited during January while they were almost iced over but regardless of the season, they are beautiful! Also, because of the moisture in the Portland area, there is no lack of greenery, or should I say beautiful moss!

The falls are right off the highway (30 mins from city) and don't require a hike, BUT if your adventurous self feels the need to see more, there is a 2 mile mild hike, or a more difficult 5.4 mile hike with greater elevation.

Rogue Ales Public House & Distillery (Stout!)

1339 NW Flanders St, Portland, OR 97209

This may not be the original Rogue tap room but couldn't miss this place, sort of nostalgic! We sat down at the bar and the bartender immediately greeted us with their 10-Hop IPA, if you enjoy a bag of hops hitting your mouth, this one is for you! Location is cool, they serve food, and it's full of eclectic Rogue gear and beer.

We shared two flights and our faves were the Double Chocolate Stout and Santas Reserve 2015. Both on the dark side and drink beautifully!

I still can't get over the Beard Beer - it's brewed with yeast from the brewmaster's beard! *Insert Sour Face* but it was good, so I suppose we like beer brewed with beard.

10 Barrel Brewing (Food!)

1411 NW Flanders St, Portland, OR 97232

So this place is right across the street from Rogue, this Brewery tour of Portland is easy; we thought! This time around we were hungry and decided to grab some lunch. Both opted for the pizza & salad deal, choice of an amazing selection of Pizzas.. for salad we both got caesar and there was something unique in our salad, it was Kale - you would Portland, you would.

For the flight, you don't get to choose but get this awesome 10 taster flight. Our one favorite was Nibbin' Out - a chocolate mint stout you can't miss!

Also utilizing my amazing Alaska sweater.

Cascade Brewing Barrel House (Sour!)

939 SE Belmont St, Portland, OR 97214

Not your usual brewery, all of their beers are Barrel aged and most are on the sour side. I must say, this WAS our favorite place! They had a warm sour.. like a mouled wine, It's the Glueh Kriek and it was so incredibly delicious, you might reconsider sours if you don't have a taste for them before! It was hard to pinpoint a favorite at this place as all of their beer was quite good (not kidding!) we also enjoyed Vlad the IMP PALER, definitely sour face worthy.

Glueh Kriek with a slice of orange and plate of pickled veggies on the side.

If you know anything about me, I (Polina) LOVE pickles! Cascade serves a plate of pickled veggies for $2.50 - you can't say no to that! How great is it to have some sour pickles with your sour beer - Genius!! I need to start pickling at home, can someone teach me?

This place is visit worthy in your Brew Tour of Portland - two thumbs up!

Henry's 12th Street Tavern (Selection!)

10 NW 12th Ave, Portland, OR 97209

This isn't a brewery but they have an incredible selection of local beer, great pub atmosphere and the spot to catch the game. We got the Bartenders choice flight from which our faves were Salted Caramel Stout by Breakside Brewing, you don't get too much of the caramel but you do get just enough to make it a great drinking stout.

Check out that strip of Ice on the bar! What a genius way to keep your beer cold while sitting at the bar.

So you've just experienced some of our favorite spots BUT we can't forget the other places we visited:

  • The Commons Brewery - Try their famous award winning Urban Farmhouse Ale. Also try the cheese pairing and let us know what you like, completely missed this! Lack of seating, not our favorite atmosphere.
  • Fat Head's Brewery - Friendly Staff! Try the Pimp my Sleigh
  • Star Bar - Not a tap house or brewery, but a great dive bar.  Order the tots!
  • Gras Cannabis Dispensary - Portland legalized recreational marijuana in late 2015.  If this is your thing than get out to Portland.  This is not our thing, but when in Portland.
  • The Growler Guys - Great concept of a one stop shop for your Growler fill up.
  • Hair of the Dog Brewery & Tasting Room - Nice atmosphere and beers. They had pickled veggies!!!! Chicago needs to learn a thing or two.

bread & butter, pickled veggies, and flight at Hair of the Dog Brewery

Time to go home!

Have you been to any of these places - other favorites we missed? Now that you know what we love, what recommendations do you have for our next visit to Portland!?
